Modelling student online behaviour in a virtual learning environment

In recent years, distance education has enjoyed a major boom. Much work at The Open University (OU) has focused on improving retention rates in these modules by providing timely support to students who are at risk of failing the module. In this paper we explore methods for analysing student activity in online virtual learning environment (VLE) – General Unary Hypotheses Automaton (GUHA) and Mar...

Using Learning Analytics to Identify Medical Student Misconceptions in an Online Virtual Patient Environment

This study aimed to identify misconceptions in medical student knowledge by mining user interactions in the MedU online learning environment. Data from 13000 attempts at a single virtual patient case were extracted from the MedU MySQL database. A subgroup discovery method was applied to identify patterns in learner-generated annotations and responses to multiple-choice items on the diagnosis an...

Student Modeling in an Active Learning Environment using Bayesian Networks

Learning environments that allow for active (constructivist) learning lead to different adaptation requirements than environments based on more conventional teaching strategies. We discuss our approach of building adaptive hyperbooks (adaptive extendible information resources on the internet). The adaptation techniques used in our hyperbooks are based on a goal-driven approach for selecting pro...

Improving Grasp Skills Using Schema Structured Learning

In the control-based approach to robotics, complex behavior is created by sequencing and combining control primitives. While it is desirable for the robot to autonomously learn the correct control sequence, searching through the large number of potential solutions can be time consuming. This paper constrains this search to variations of a generalized solution encoded in a framework known as an ...
